I took these photos from the front gate at work back in March (30/3/09). I had a few minutes to spare and the sun was just coming up.

Christmas Haul

Filed under: Idle Ramblings — pearsey @ 7:51 pm

Following on from last year, we have this year’s Christmas details.

Presents: Sunbeam Mixmaster Compact Pro, Digital SD Set Top Box (with USB record and playback), square corning ware casserole dish with lid, Natural Wonders of Australia 2010 calendar, hair straightener, Bathox Handwash, personalised postage stamps with a photo of Gary and I on them, a Christmas Tea Towel and placemat, a single soup/spag bowl large (the same as I got last year) and 1 smaller one, guitar tuner, light globe, the painting I bought in Laos was mounted and framed for me, SVideo bidirectional adapter, RCA plugs, a left/right audio to headphone plug, 2 rolls of waxed lunch wrap, a cushion insert for my cushion cover, a necklace, and a pair of long handed tree loppers.

Inventive Present Wrapping: Steve and I again had Gary in our sights. This time his presents were wrapped in a pass the parcel kind of format. Each time he opened a present he had either a challenge to complete or a question to answer before he could continue unwrapping. The questions were reasonably easy, but a couple of challenges were a little harder. The “one fluffy bunny” marshmallow game (up to ten) was funny to watch (video footage is around somewhere!) and the “tie a knot in a snake with your mouth/tongue” was also good value. Not quite as long as last year, but equally enthralling.

Boxing Day Entertainment: This year I headed off to the cricket to watch Australia and Pakistan with Mike and Shirley. Was a slow start to the day cricket wise, but thankfully Australia got a bit of a move on later in the day. The crowd of course, is the main reason you go to the cricket and that was worth being part of. The three guys from Brisbane in kilts I met on the tram on the way back also deserve a special mention!

Christmas Day entertainment: Well, I was hoping to sleep in, but that didn’t happen, so I went for a run instead, came home to sing some Christmas carols, then headed off to Mum and Dads for a traditional Christmas lunch, complete with Pudding, with Mum/Dad/Steve. The evening was spent showing off my Laos ’09 photos to the family, a bbq tea with Mum/Dad/Heather/Gary/Steve, then the present opening!

Hope you had a great Christmas anyway, because I did!

Are you ready for Christmas?

Filed under: Idle Ramblings — pearsey @ 4:58 pm

I was asked the other day “Are you ready for Christmas”?  Such a simple question, but I wasn’t quite sure how to respond.

Am I ready?  Well yeah, I have most of my presents purchased.  They’re not wrapped yet, but that’s not hard.  Am I ready for a 4 day holiday, followed by a 3 day week before another 3 day weekend?  YES!  Am I ready to catch up with my brother and sister when they come home for the holidays?  Yep.  What about food wise?  Yes, I think Mum has all that organised.   But am I ready?

Am I ready?  Am I ready for Christmas?

But…. is Christmas really about presents, family, holidays and food?  I watch people scurrying around Christmas eve – doing last minute preparations.  Hurridly looking for the last minute gift to give somebody, buying up more food (just in case they don’t have enough leftovers for 10 days), busily organising homes and houses so they are prepared for family to come around or madly finishing off work before going on holidays.  As I drove home  today, I drove past the guy with about 50 chairs on the back of his trailer – no doubt headed somewhere where they’ll be sat upon tomorrow.  But next I passed a policeman.  He’d pulled somebody over, no doubt frustrated, as drivers dash everywhere, all in a mad panic, trying to get things done before the big day tomorrow.  Is he ready for Christmas?  All he wants is for us to drive safely so he doesn’t have to get called out to a road accident.

What about the broken families?  Are they ready for Christmas?  Are they ready for possible arguments, or sharing Christmas apart from their kids, or the violence and despair that may follow a Christmas meal?

And where in all of this is the true meaning of Christmas?  Sure, many, many people think that Christmas is about family, food, presents and holidays.

But amid the hustle and bustle, do we quieten our hearts to be truly ready Christmas?  Do we take time out to focus on what Christmas is truly about – that is the birth of a Saviour who is Messiah and Master?  The birth of our Saviour, a tiny baby born in a manager, but a baby born as Saviour, Messiah and Master.  God himself, revealed in a human being.  When Jesus came, it was a great and joyous event.  He brought peace on earth (Luke 2).

We sing about it in the Christmas carols and we listen to the message in those same Christmas carols.  It’s what Christmas is all about.  A great and joyous event, an event that brings peace to the world.  An event that divided history.  An event that changed the world forever.  A baby born in a manager.  Born as a Saviour, Messiah and Master.

Are you ready?  Ready to reflect on what Christmas really means?  Ready to celebrate with gusto the birth of a Saviour who changed the course of the world?  Ready to draw strength from that event and go on to greater things? As I think on this, and my Saviour Jesus, born in a manger, changing the course of history, I can’t help but ponder what Jesus went on to do. He conquered the world. And the same spirit that lives in Jesus, that allowed Him to come into the world and that raised Him from the dead, lives in me.

You know what?  I think I’m ready!

Dodgy Kris Kringle Presents…

Filed under: Idle Ramblings — pearsey @ 1:56 pm

We had our office Christmas party on Friday and as part of the fun, we have a kris kringle. Well I scored a dodgy pocket knife and a plastic whistle which doubled as a compass and thermometer. The compass was so dodgy that north pointed every direction and I’m sure the knife wouldn’t have cut butter. I’m not sure how, but I’m sure I end up with the worst KK present every year! Anyway, I heard a little rumour afterwards that the guy who was buying my KK present actually forgot. So he grabbed some “goodies” out of the car of a work colleague!

Still Alive…

Hey… it’s been a while, but now we enter the holiday season, so maybe I’ll blog a bit more, or upload some photos on flickr. Perhaps I’ll even blog about my holiday! Hmmm…. don’t get too excited!

But, this is more just an advertisement! I was looking for something for my sister and her boyfriend for Christmas. I won’t say what just incase they read this! But, I came across this site: Global Travel Accessories. I ended up buying a few things, very reasonably priced, with prompt and efficient service. I’d recommend them anytime!
